What Colour Schemes Work For A Spring Wedding? – Ask The Wedding Expert

bari-jay-bridesmaid-dress-style-284

Question from Rachel:

Hello, I am having trouble thinking of a colour scheme for our wedding in May next year.  The room where the service and reception is taking place has a lot of dark blue and my dress will be ivory with a crystal beaded waistline.  I have 4 bridesmaids 2 with dark hair and features and 1 with blonde hair and very pale skin.  Can you give me any suggestions?

Answer from Wedding Expert Angela:

Hi Rachel, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  You do not say what style of wedding you are having—formal, contemporary, casual.  So, I will answer according to the season.  May is spring, so any of the spring colours would be appropriate—yellows, peach, coral, orange, greens, pinks, violet.  Take your pick! But really, there is no wrong colour for any season when it comes to weddings.  Brown is a very popular summer colour for bridesmaid dresses, is a neutral, and looks lovely with ivory accents which would match your dress.

This video I made on wedding colour ideas might help you decide what colours to put together.  If you are bold, you could try lime-green, pink and blue—they are a great combination for a fresh, spring look.  If you are more concerned with what looks best on your bridesmaid, I suggest you ask them what their best colours are.  I’m sure they know.  Then, the next step would be to go shopping and try on different colours and see what works and what doesn’t.

Every colour has an undertone colour, and that is what you need to consider when trying to ensure your bridal party looks their best.  The only way to do that is to try bridesmaid dresses on and see what works.  Once you find what you like, make a note of the manufacturer and style number.  You can often find the same product cheaper online, as online stores do not have the overhead a physical store has.

Good luck, and if you have further questions, feel free to ask.

Do The Colours of Brown and Eggplant Go Together? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Kyla:

I am wanting to go with a chocolate brown color (expresso) for bridesmaids dresses.  I am looking at bridesmaids bouquets of simple eggplant(?) calla lillies.  What shades of purple go with chocolate brown for the overall color scheme?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Kyla, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  Brown is a neutral colour, so any colour will go with it.  The best purple or eggplant colour has an undertone that matches that of the brown.  When the undertones of a colour match up, the colours will go together.  How do you know if the colours work?  Place them next to each other.  If they look fine, they are.  If you don’t have an eye for colour, ask your florist.  That is their expertise.

Brown bridesmaid dresses are very popular, and are a classic choice.  Congratulations, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

How Do I Use Brown, Cream and Bronze In The Bridesmaid Dresses? – Ask The Wedding Expert

Question from Victoria:

How do I coordinate colours brown, cream and bronze with the bridal party outfits.  Any ideas on how these colours can be coordinated well on the outfits in order to look elegant?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Victoria, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  Brown and cream look very beautiful together.  I suggest using bronze as an accent colour.  The bronze colour could be in the accessories like handbag, bridesmaid jewellery, or shoes.  You could have a bronze cloth “belt” on the dress, if the style you have chosen suits it.

Bronze is an interesting colour because it depends upon how it works with the brown—it needs to have the same undertone of colour to work well together.  If the bronze has a shimmery, metallic look to it, it could really add sparkle to the outfits.  I suggest you look at some different bridesmaids dress styles to see what the designers have done with multicoloured dresses, or how they have used metallics in their designs.

I saw a beautiful brown bridesmaid dress at a wedding I attended a long time ago.  It was a beautiful, soft deep chocolate brown with a wrap style bodice, and a cocktail length A-line skirt that was slightly flared.  The bodice had a cream lapel trimmed in lace that was squared in the back, and ran in a thinning taper across both sides of the wrap in front.  That particular dress had a black belt.  The dress looked so beautiful that I made a mental note of it.  It also suited the different body types wearing it, and the cream colour worked with the colouring of the bridesmaids wearing it, so they all looked quite radiant.  Of course, that was the 80′s, and big lapels were “in” back then—but you get the idea, and dress styles can be modified.

You could have a brown bridesmaid dress with a bronze and cream accented “jacket”—bolero, shrug, or similar item.  Maybe you want metallic bronze lace layered over the brown dress, with cream sash belt, shoes, and handbag.  There is no one right way to use these colours in your bridesmaid dresses.  Explore what the designers have done, and take the things you like best to create something that reflects your personal style.

Buying A Wedding Dress – Money Saving Tips

maggie-sottero-wedding-dress-leanne

Wedding apparel takes approximately 7% of your wedding budget—sometimes more.  Here are some ways to save money on your wedding apparel.

Money Saving Tip #1 – buy your wedding dress through the mail, on-line, or from a discount house.  These companies have smaller overhead costs, and can offer you the same dress for up to 20% to 30% less.

Money Saving Tip #2 – In a word–”haggle”.  Ask for a better price.  If you have another quote from a discount house, quote them the price and see if they will match it for you.  Sometimes bridal salons have a “no frills” package at a lower price, but you will often have to forego the free gown bag, free pressing, and any other services they might normally include.  If you are a perfect size 10, and don’t need alternations, haggle for a better price.

Money Saving Tip #3 – Rent your gown and accessories.  This will give you a big cost savings, and no one will ever know.  Many grooms and groomsmen rent their tuxedos, so why not rent your wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses?  You will be surprised at the cost savings, and you can often rent a more flamboyant, elegant, pricier wedding dress than what you could afford to purchase.

Money Saving Tip #4 – Buy a “sample gown” that the bridal shops use for brides to try on.  These gowns are in perfect shape, but often come down in price, especially if the dress is no longer being carried by the shop.  Ask at your bridal salon if they have any of these because they are often glad to sell the dress and are willing to do so at a discount.

Money Saving Tip #5 – Purchase a used dress.  You can find beautiful, expensive wedding gowns, worn only once, at consignment shops, in newspaper ads, or even garage sales.  Sometimes bridal salons take gowns on consignment, so ask if they have any in their store.

Money Saving Tip #6 – If you are planning on spending a lot of money on your wedding dress, you might consider custom designing and having a seamstress/tailor make it for you.  If you are a sewer, you might consider making it yourself.

Money Saving Tip #7 – Some bridesmaid dresses are just as elaborate as a wedding dress, but come at a fraction of the price.  You will have to add the bridal veil, headpiece, gloves, etc., but the cost will still be less than a wedding dress package.  You will be surprised at some of the beautiful options you have if you explore this money saving tip.

Money Saving Tip #8 – Have a seamstress re-work your mother’s wedding dress, or maybe the wedding dress of a friend or relative.  The problem often comes with what to do with the wedding dress after the wedding, so others may be happy to let the wedding gown go to you.

Money Saving Tip #9 – If you love the vintage look, you might be surprised at what you can find at a vintage clothings store—including authentic wedding dresses from another time.

Money Saving Tips #10 – Hire a student clothing designer.  If you have a clothing design school nearby, inquire to see if any of the students are interested in creating your wedding dress.  You can get a custom designed dress for much less than your local bridal salon.
