What Colours Should I Choose For My Wedding? – Ask The Wedding Expert Answer

Question from Shannon:

I don’t really know what colour i want to use because almost everyone use the same colour in our community.  My favorite colours are baby blue, lime, hunter green, and my bridesmaid are all fair skin. Could you please help me choose a colour soon.  Oh yeah, my brother is using the same colour I was going to use.

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Shannon, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  Blue, lime green, and pink are a classic colour trio (called triadic) that works really well for weddings.  Hunter green goes really beautifully with ivory/cream and burgundy.  This video on how to choose your wedding colours should be helpful to you.

When choosing your colours, keep the color tones the same.  For example, in the triadic colours explained above, either go with soft blue, soft lime green, and soft pink, or keep all three colours bold.  The colour tones should be the same when you are combining colours.

Remember that using whites, browns, and blacks are all classic, and because they are neutral, you can punch up the drama with a single bold colour.  Think black and white with punches of red.  Or, brown and white with accents of yellow or yellow and melon.

There are so many choices, and you are only limited by your imagination.  Look at bridal magazines (and other magazines) to see the way colours are put together, and you are sure to get many more ideas.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

What Wedding Colours Should I Choose? – Ask The Wedding Expert Answer

Question from Tracia:

Hi, I would like to know what kind of color combinations can go nicely with a gold/yellowish ballroom background? I am planning to have a 2 color combination.  The colors of chair & table covers are very limited, I think only white, red, and cream colors are available.  My wedding will be at Christmas time but I do not like the color combination of red and green, I prefer more soft colors.  I am wondering if silver and cream color would blend well into the gold/yellowish background?  Or do you have any other ideas?   Many thanks!

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Tracia, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  Neutral colours will go with any other colour.  Neutrals are whites (stark white to soft, creamy whites), black (stark black to soft pale grey), and browns (deep, rich brown to soft pale beige).  Most of your metallic colours are also neutral (copper is in the brown family, for example) and silver is like white—neutral.

I think you are worrying too much about your background colours of gold/yellowish.  It sounds pretty neutral to me, and once you have the low lighting which is directed lighting, you will not even notice the walls.  I have a few recommendations:  1)  ask you reception site what colours are available, and  2) ask to see what the room looks like with the lights low, and decorated for a function or event.  That will give you the information you need to move forward.

I am certain that the facility has more colours of linen than just white, red, and cream—that is a very limited selection.  Ask if they (or you) can bring in other colour linens.  You don’t have to, but it is nice to know what your options are.

Then, the next step is to choose your colours.  This video on choosing your wedding colours will be helpful.

Since you are having a winter wedding, the classic colours are white, blue and silver.  What about Hunter Green and Burgundy?  How about Purple and Peach?  Since you like the soft colours, how about browns and beiges?  They are very elegant, and neutral, so any colour would go well with it if you wanted a splash of colour.

You suggest silver and cream, and they go very well together, but you need some colour, or it will be too washed out looking.  When you have a large room, you need a focal point, and use of a colour or two will provide that.

I suggest you look in bridal magazines, and bridal books (your local library is a great source) and see what colour combinations you like.  Looking through interior decorating magazines or books will also give you ideas for table centrepieces, and colour combinations.

Good luck, and if you have further questions, feel free to ask.

What Colours Go With Blue Orchids? – Ask The Expert Answer

Question from Brittany:

Hi, I am having quite the challange finding colours that go well with Blue Orchids.  Since Blue Orchids are stem-dyed Pink Orchids I was thinking about having some pink and I love the colour green as well.  How can I combined these colours without it looking like too much, and keeping it elegant at the same time.

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Brittany, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  The real trick with keeping things elegant is simplicity—repeated throughout the decor.  The use of neutrals  (white, black, brown) in their many shades also contribute to keeping things elegant.

As for blue orchids, or the colour blue, the usual combinations are:  1) shades of blue, 2) blue with green and/or purple, 3) blue and melon, 4) blue, pink and lime-green.

Since you are leaning towards the blue-pink-lime green combination, I would suggest that you use these colours in your decor.  To keep it elegant, use these colours as accents to your neutral white and black which are the usual colours for an elegant wedding.  The trick to elegant is not in what colours you choose, but in how you use the colours.  Use them strategically to make a bold statement, or softly in more locations in your decor.

This video on choosing your wedding colours will help you finalize your colour choices.  Many brides choose to hire a wedding planner, or an interior decorator for a day to help them plan their wedding colours and decor.  You may opt for this choice.

Good luck, and if you have further questions, feel free to email again, or comment below.

Can I Do Two Colours For A Summer Wedding? – Ask The Wedding Expert Answer

Question from Hannah:

Is it ok to do two colors for your wedding if its in the summer time?

Answer from Bridal Expert Angela:

Hi Hannah, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  Yes, you can do two or more colours if you like.  I had one bride who used all the colours in the rainbow—literally.  Every bridesmaid had a rainbow colour and those colours were all over her decor.  Their theme was a rainbow.  It was bright and lively and expressed the couple perfectly.  There are no rules about how many colours to use in any particular season.

How Do I Make A Pink Dress Work With Red Hair? – Ask The Wedding Expert Answer

Question from Sabrina:

I was wondering what I should do about my wedding colors. I mean I wanted a pink and white wedding, but my maid of honor has red hair and pale skin. She said that she’s willing to wear any color pink I want but she just might not look that good in it. So should I incorporate another color into my wedding?  I am planning on having three bridesmaids  including her should I have them all wear the same color dress or can they each wear a different color but same style dress? Sorry if this sounds confusing I just don’t know what to do :(

Answer from Wedding Expert Angela:

Hi Sabrina and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  First let us talk about the bridesmaid dresses.  It is perfectly acceptable to have your bridesmaids wearing different colours AND different styles of bridesmaid dress.  This is a more common European trend than a North American trend, but it is done here also.

As to colour, well there are many kinds of pink—-from hot pink to the softest, pale pink.  If you can find a pink that works with your MOH’s skin tone, you can have the bridesmaids in another shade of pink.  Pink, lime green and blue go together.  Pink goes with red and purple.  Or you can use multiple shades of pink.

Those are your basic choices.  Try to find a pink that works with you MOH first, since your desire is for a pink and white wedding.  If you can’t get a good pink colour, I suggest blue as a secondary colour—it works really well with red heads.  Pink and blue are a classic combination, and you can have predominantly pink and white, will smaller hits of blue throughout the flowers and decorations.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions, pleae feel free to email.

Wedding Colour Accents of Red and Yellow – Ask The Wedding Expert Answer

Question from Klaudia:

My dress white with red in it, groom in black with red accents. Guests, bridesmaids, groomsmen and the such in black with yellow accents mixed with very little red. My flowers are red with some yellow in them. Decorations are accented with yellow but some red in them also. does with work? I want me and him to have red and little yellow. Everyone else with more yellow and little red. My favored color is red, his is yellow. How else can we make it work?

Answer from Wedding Expert Angela:

Hi Klaudia, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  I think you have planned it very well.  The colours go together beautifully, and the way you are accenting one colour between yourselves, and another colour with the rest of the bridal party is excellent.  You have a great grasp of colour and how to put it together, so, from this point, it is really a matter of personal taste whether you accent one or another colour.

The only suggestion I have is to play around with the colours in your reception decorations.  Some options are:  keep the head table decorations accented like you and your groom, and keep the guest tables accented like your bridal party.  This would keep a bolder focus on you as a couple.  Or, you can do the opposite, and decorate your reception site using all colours equally.  That would give it a whole different feel.  As I said, it’s a matter of personal taste at this point.

Good luck with the rest of your wedding plans.  If you have further questions, feel free to emai again.

How Do I Choose My Wedding Flowers? – Ask The Wedding Expert Answer

Question from Pat:

Finding the right flowers for my wedding.  My wedding colors are green and white.  Ideas for Fourth of July.  Reception is in the park.

Answer from Wedding Expert Angela:

Hi Pat and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  We have a video on choosing wedding flowers in our free series on wedding planning.  Green and white open you up to almost any flower colours.  I would suggest greens, blues and purples.  They are a great choice.  If you want something with a WOW factor, go with red.  It is a classic choice with green, and would make a great 4th of July statement!

As for the 4th of July, fireworks immediately come to mind.  Since you are in a park, you would have to be licensed to have fireworks, so contact the Park administration.  A lot depends upon whether you are having a formal or informal wedding.  I attended a great informal wedding where volleyball, baseball, and horseshoes were available.  Of course, they had a tent with a wooden dance floor with a live band, so it really covered all the bases.  The outdoors lends itself to a butterfly release or a dove release as part of the events.

I hope these ideas will give you some things to explore.

How Do I Choose My Wedding Theme Colours? – Ask The Wedding Expert

harmonious-colour-scheme

Question from Faith:

I need ideas on my theme colours…it’s a garden wedding both ceremony and reception.  My second question is- I want to use long tables for the reception instead of round any ideas?

Answer from Wedding Expert Angela:

Hi Faith, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.  I am assuming it is a summer wedding since you state it is a garden wedding.  What are the predominant colours of the garden?  Green is probably your answer, unless it is full of flowers and has a dominant colour.  Why do I ask this question?  Depending upon your answer you might choose to work with the dominant colour in the setting.

Assuming green, you could go with pale green bridesmaid dresses, accenting flowers with turquoise, or lime green.  Maybe you want to add a splash of a few colours like purple and pale orange.

Or you have the choice of picking any colour you love, and ignoring the green background.  Note the photo in this post—an outdoor wedding and a choice of pink and mauve (colours next to each other on the colour wheel).  Watch this video on wedding colour choices to understand picking colours.

As for rectangular tables instead of round tables, they are treated the same way as round tables.  Long tables do lend themselves to different choices when it comes to table centrepieces.  For example, you could have a row of flower petals along the centre of the table leading to a central vase.  Alternatively, you could have long rectangular containers as centrepieces, with sand and tea lights, or water with floating candles and flower blossoms.

For both you wedding colours, and your centrepieces, I recommend that you google reception decorations to see what your options are.  What colour table linens do you have available to you?  That might help you decide your wedding colours, too.  Our free video series on wedding planning has three separate videos that address decorations—table centrepieces, and more.  You might consider signing up for them after viewing the one on wedding colour choices.
